Messy Bun Crochet Beanie Pattern

Yesterday, my facebook BLEW UP with friends posting a picture of a crocheted Beanie with a messy bun sticking out....on my wall asking "Can you make this?" "OMG! How much would you charge me if you made this?" "I would buy 3 of these if you made them"
I woke up this morning determined to make something similar to this beanie. So I did.
I only have a written pattern (down below) I have not made a photo pattern because I have a 3 month old and am surprised that I even finished it today.

Stitches Used
Half Double Crochet--HDC
Double Crochet--DC
Treble Crochet--TC
Cross Stitch--Skip st, Treble stitch in next st; Cross back going in front of Treble stitch just made, and Treble stitch in skipped st.
Front Post Double Crochet--FPDC
Back Post Double Crochet--BPDC
Slip Stitch--Sl St

Make Magic Ring. Ch 2
Round 1: HDC 50. Join with sl st into 1st HDC DO NOT PULL TIGHT. THIS IS WHERE YOU WILL ADJUST AROUND BUN OR PONYTAIL
Round 2: Ch 2. *2DC in same stitch, 1 DC in next 3 stitches* 11 times. 1DC in last 5 stitches.(62)
Round 3: Ch 2. 1 DC in same stitch and each stitch around. Join (62).
Round 4: Ch 3. Cross back to last DC made in previous round and make TC, 1st cross stitch made. *Cross Stitch* Repeat 31 times. Join at the top of ch 3(31 cross stitches).
Round 5-7: Repeat Round 3.
Round 8: Repeat Round 4.
Round 9: Repeat Round 3.
Round 10-12: Ch 2. FPDC in stitch from previous round. BPDC in next. Continue on until end of round. Join. Weave in ends.

I have seen one like this that they crocheted around a ponytail holder. Looks like I will try this one for a g-daughter.

I'm confused on row 2. I did what it said and yet I come up with 69 stitches?
ReplyDeleteOnce you reach stitch 60 you should have two stitches left just put a single DC in each

Round 3 I came up with the 62 stitches.....but row 4, I can only come up with 31 cross stitches... I've done it twice and I still can't figure it out :/

DeleteIn row four, what stitches and how many are in between the cross stitches? The instructions are not clear to me. It sounds like you are working backwards. How do you get 31 cross stitches when there are 62 stitches?
Delete2 stitches form an X or cross, so count as 1 stitch.

I have just crocheted 24 foundation less double crochets and then joined and stayed on most any other pattern's row 3. I think I will try yours next.
ReplyDeleteStitch count is not right if you double crochet 51 then when you get to row 2 and follow pattern you end up with 64 I'm confused

DeleteDo you leave a long tail of yarn after the first round? And then what do they do with it after they adjusted it around their ponytail? I've done one but I started by crocheting around a ponytail holder .
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is meant to be adjusted around the Ponytail, but meant to be left as a large hole. I weaved in the tail into my work, but like the idea of a ponytail holder also.
DeleteI left the string because you can pull it to loosen/tighten it. I just tuck it into the inside of the hat when wearing it.

Love the pattern, and thanks for sharing. A little tip I figured out on the cross stitches: after the first TC, wrap yarn over hook 1 time, move hook to other side of just completed TC, wrap yarn over again. Working between, insert hook into previous DC and pull yarn through. Still in between, wrap yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops. Move hook to other side of completed TC and finish TC with yarn over hook and pulling through 2 loops 2 more times. This gives the cross stitch more of an X look. Otherwise, I was getting a V look.

DeleteLove the pattern! Only thing I did differently was hdc's around a ponytail holder and slipped the chain 2 and just ch 3 to start each round. Made 2 for my teenage granddaughters. Going to make a couple for myself also! I don't usually wear hats because of my long hair being in a ponytail or a bun.
